Willie Murphy Originals Navajo Artist William (Willie) Murphy Takes 1st
Place and "Best of Show" at 1999 Gallup Ceremonial
Willie Murphy takes 1st Place and "Best of Show at the 1999 New Mexico State Fair Self taught Native American artist William Murphy , Willie (as he is better known), added to his growing list of art awards by taking 1st Place and "Best of Show" in both the 1999 Gallup Indian Ceremonial and the 1999 New Mexico State Fair. About himself and his art, Willie says that with the exception of three years of art classes in high school he has developed his talent and style by experimenting freely in oil and studying the works of other well know artists. He recalls that in the 1970s when he was twenty-eight he realized oil media was where he wanted to take his art. Willie says the inspiration for his works draw on his experiences growing up and living in Crownpoint New Mexico, on the eastern side of the Navajo Reservation. Not unlike many others in his community, Willie herded sheep when he was a young boy. Later while working as a professional cowboy he developed a love for rodeo. Willie says most of his paintings relate to these experiences and he believes his paintings help define the beauty of the Navajo culture. Willie says "It's very interesting how a painting can walk and talk for you."
